EC orders FIR against Kejriwal for bribery remarks
New Delhi: The Election Commission on Sunday ordered an FIR to be filed against Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal for making bribery remarks during a Goa rally.
Kejriwal at an election rally had asked people to accept money from Congress and BJP but vote for AAP, after which a notice of model code violation was issued by the Election Commission. A day after the notice was served, Delhi CM questioned the Election Commission’s authenticity, wondering if the EC was taking orders from the Prime Minister’s Office.
The Election Commission, then, ordered poll authorities in Goa to register an FIR against Arvind Kejriwal for speaking about rival political parties and bribery at a poll rally in the state. The EC stated that they would de-recognize AAP if they continued making such statements.
The Commission has asked for compliance report on legal action against Kejriwal by 31 January.
Seven state elections are scheduled in 2017 – Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Goa, Punjab, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh- making this a crucial year for all national parties.
